A conversation recently developed with a grassroots organizer about where to donate our money at the national level to help the cause. I, personally, have not been a regular coordinated donor in the past and I am not familiar with how it all works. I typically stick to donating to my candidate(s) of choice to make sure my money is going to the right cause. I don’t know anything about PACs and I’m weary of donating money to an entity that funnels its money to several different places.
What I found is that of course you can donate money to your favorite candidate(s) and you should, but when it comes to lower profile races that are not on your radar… there are ways you can help.
In this case, our grassroots organizer helped explain where the party needs money:
DCCC – Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee: This committee develops, deploys and supports strategies to gain seats in the U.S. House of Reps. It also supports some state organizations.
DLCC – Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee: This committee develops, deploys and supports strategies to gain seats in the state legislatures. It works in concert with state organizations.
DSCC – Democratic Senate Campaign Committee: This committee develops, deploys and supports strategies to gain seats in the U.S. Senate. [It supports re-election of key Dems in red States. It tries to support very hard to keep seats.] It also supports key senate races that have emerged to show promise in the post-primary stage.
DNC – Democratic National Committee: The DNC formulates rules for the presidential election. It decides rules for presidential primary participation and debate. It has different committees like Rules Committee and helps with platform writing. It orchestrates, funds and oversees DNC Convention and nomination. It works through conflicts. It works very hard to hold the party together — especially given our very broad spectrum on the left. Party leadership are in this group, but are loosely affiliated with the other committees above.
So, pick your choice when it comes to supporting our party at the national level. Right now, there are hot contests across the board and plenty of seats are up for grabs. There is a coordinated effort to help win every seat. Think about what will help the most and donate accordingly!
